The SmartMat is no doubt going to become an essential to any keen yogi. The technology behind the SmartMat helps you take your practice to the next level by detecting your alignment and gives you real–time feedback on how to perfect your yoga poses.
The mat wirelessly connects to the free SmartMat app that you can download on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet and gives you all the statistics and information you need to know during and after your yoga practice. The SmartMat analyses your balance, alignment and pose and then produces an overall rating which encourages you to perfect your yoga positions – it’s like having your own personal yoga teacher in your home 24/7.
A unique feature of the SmartMat is that it’s been made to suit everyone who uses it – the company have understood fully that yoga is different for every person and no yoga practice is ever the same. The first time you use the SmartMat it will ask you to perform a series of movements to calibrate your body shape, personal limitations and size. This minimises the risk of getting hurt by over stretching yourself or holding a pose that’s in the wrong position that could potentially over time cause harm to your posture. The personal profile is then stored on the app and will automatically update itself when your practice improves.
The SmartMat Marketplace allows you to browse and attend different yoga classes and again you can get real-time feedback during the yoga practice. What’s great about the SmartMat MarketPlace is that it’s evolving in conjunction with the growth of the company, which means there’s plenty of new classes and features we can look forward to.
Going back to the SmartMat’s compatibility, it currently only connects with iOS and Android devices, however this isn’t a bad thing considering a lot of fitness gadgets rarely branch out of these main technology companies. But you will have to have software that is iOS 5+ or Android 4.3+ in order for the mat to connect to your devices.
With a 6-hour battery life you will have more than enough time to complete a full yoga practice and more within a day. When it comes to charging there is no hassle as it and charges via a standard 110v/220v USB outlet. The connectivity between the mat and your device is via Bluetooth so wherever you take your yoga practice no Internet is needed in order for you to receive real-time feedback.
What we love about the SmartMat is that it looks like a traditional yoga mat – the simplistic design means that you wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between this mat and a normal, “unintelligent”, one. The Bluetooth Protocol connectivity and the mat’s easy to roll-up material allows the mat to be 100% portable so you can take it wherever you like and not feel like you’re lugging around a piece of highly advanced technology.
The size of the mat itself coincides with any other normal yoga mat; the exact dimensions are 26″ x 71″ and the thickness of the mat is 6mm.
Just when you think the SmartMat couldn’t get any more impressive, the team behind SmartMat are also super Eco Friendly and of course have incorporated this in to the design on the mat. The mat’s material is made from a durable PVC material that is manufactured to environmentally friendly standards!
Here’s the bad news, at the moment you can only pre-order the mat from the SmartMat website by clicking here. For $150 it’s well worth checking them out and being part of something that is going to change how we look at our yoga practice and all other parts of our fitness regime.
