On average 60 million Americans have high blood pressure, also know as hypertension, but only about half of them know it. Hypertension almost never causes any symptoms, so people will not even know that they have it unless they check themselves and is usually detected only incidentally during a routine physical examination with your doctor. If left untreated, hypertension promotes atherosclerosis, which is the narrowing of the arteries, and increases the risk of a heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and serious damage to the tiny blood vessels in the eye, which can result in vision loss.
Monitoring your blood pressure at home is extremely useful for a number of reasons. It can help with early diagnosis. Self-monitoring can help your doctor diagnose high blood pressure much sooner than if you have only occasional blood pressure readings. Home monitoring is especially important if you have slightly elevated blood pressure (prehypertension) or another condition that could contribute to high blood pressure, such as diabetes or kidney problems.
Encourage better control. Self-monitoring can give you a stronger sense of responsibility for your health. You will hopefully feel even more motivated to improve your blood pressure by monitoring your diet, including more physical activates in your days and proper medication use.
Some people experience spikes in blood pressure due to anxiety associated with seeing a doctor, known as white coat hypertension. Other people have normal blood pressure at a clinic but elevated pressure elsewhere, known as masked hypertension. Monitoring blood pressure at home can help determine if you truly do have high blood pressure.
